Guided Trips

A guided trip is a great way to speed up the learning curve when it comes to steelhead fishing.  The rivers have been in shape and our guides have been out on the rivers finding some nice wild fish.

A guide trip is a great idea whether you want to learn how to spey cast, what good steelhead water looks like, or just want to give yourself the best shot at hooking a steelhead.  Our guides still have some prime winter steelhead days open.

A Day on the Water

Curt was able to get out of the shop and float one of the West End rivers.  With the cold water temps the swinging was tough but one nice fish was landed dead drifting an egg pattern from the boat.

Winter Scenes

Curt got out on the river during our cold snap and got these shots of the rainforest under a winter blanket of snow.  The fishing was slow but should be picking up over the next few weeks as more native steelhead start entering the rivers.

West End Regulation Change

WDFW Rule Change for Hoko River

Fishing to close on Hoko River downstream from the hatchery

Action: Close to fishing – from boats and both banks – the portion of the Hoko River from the hatchery fish ladder downstream for 100 feet.

Effective Dates: Dec. 3 through Dec. 31, 2012

Species affected: Returning adult steelhead

Location: Hoko River at the Makah tribal fish hatchery

Reason for action: The Hoko Hatchery is far short of broodstock program needs. Closing the portion of the river outside the fish ladder will allow steelhead to aggregate outside the ladder and move up into the facility without disturbance from fishing activity.

Other information: The closed portion of the bank area on the northwest side of the Hoko River (opposite the hatchery) is the bank area between the posted signs.

Information Contact: Mike Gross; (360) 249-1210.

Dirty Side of the Rip

Chris headed out into the Strait this morning in search of blackmouth and got a closeup of the sediment plume coming out of the Elwha.  Usually the dirty side of the rip is used to describe the side of the tide rip filled with loose seaweed and debris, not silt pouring out of the Elwha.

The fishing was slow with only one shaker (undersized) blackmouth landed on a Calamarko tube fly pattern.
