The Gartside Gurgler is simple to tie and a very effective saltwater surface pattern. The Gurgler was designed for striped bass but is now used for saltwater species around the globe. On the Olympic Peninsula, the Gurgler in smaller sizes works well for sea-run cutthroat along the beaches in Hood Canal and Puget Sound. When tied a bit larger it brings coho salmo, pink salmon, and rockfish to the surface. It can be modified with a stinger hook to deal with the short strikes when fishing coho salmon at Neah Bay or inside the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
Here’s a quick video on how to tie this fly.
