The Fishing
The scenic Olympic Peninsula is home to one of the most diverse year-round fisheries available. Rivers like the Hoh, Sol Duc, and Bogachiel are world famous for their runs of winter steelhead and salmon. They also host sea-run cutthroat and summer steelhead, and often you can target multiple species in the same day.
Resident rainbows on the upper Elwha are fat, acrobatic, and love to eat dry flies. The protected beaches of Hood Canal and the Strait of Juan de Fuca are excellent for saltwater cutthroat and salmon.
Offshore fishing from Neah Bay and Sekiu offers anglers the thrill of casting to ferocious schools of coho and pink salmon, along with sea bass and lingcod.
Float tubing the lowland lakes is relaxing and productive, with settings like Lake Crescent, which holds unique strains of rainbow and cutthroat.
If hiking is your thing, lace up your boots and head for the mountains. Olympic National Park contains many alpine lakes where beautiful brook trout cruise the pristine water.
You will also find trout on the upper reaches and tributaries of our larger rivers, and the dozens of creeks and smaller less-known rivers can offer exciting sea-run cutthroat and winter steelhead fishing. So, if you’re reading this wondering if you should pack your fly rod…pack several!
