Current Fishing Report - Updated Tuesday, February 22nd, 2012

THE RIVERS

OVERVIEW - All of the rivers got blown out yesterday as a big front pushed through, raising the snow level and dumping lots of rain.  We had a great day Monday before they went out, thanks to Alexander landing a beautiful chromer in the mid teens.  It looks like a little more rain on Friday/Saturday, but the snow level will be down, so hopefully we will be fishing this weekend.

Fresh Native Steelhead
  Large Native Steelhead

ELWHA –Dam removal is underway!  You can watch the progress at this web address http://www.nps.gov/olym/photosmultimedia/elwha-river-webcams.htm. The lower river is open for Steelhead through February.  Unfortunately, the river is still quite dirty.  Hopefully is clears soon, but don’t hold your breath.

DUNGENESS –Closed.

SOL DUC – Fishing should be very good when it drops into shape.

BOGACHIEL / CALAWAH – Might have been slowing down some before the rain, but there were still some nice fish around.  We’ll see if the rain brings more.

Fall sea-run cutthroat

HOH – It will be a little longer for the Hoh to clear up, but it usually starts to get good about now.

CREEKS –Many of the Strait of Juan de Fuca streams closed early.  The Dungeness, Morse Creek, Deep Creek, Pysht River, Clallam River, and Sekiu River all closed Feb. 1st.

SALTWATER:

Beach Fishing for Cutthroat

BEACHES – February is probably the slowest month for saltwater cutthroat fishing, but March is just around the corner and that’s when it starts to pick up.  In the winter months, Delia’s Conehead Squid is our go-to pattern.

LAKES

LOWLAND LAKES –Many lowland lakes remain open throughout the winter, but the cold weather will slow things down a bit. Gibbs Lake, Teal Lake or Wentworth Lake are usually some of the better spots.  Streamers, chironomids, scuds and dragonfly nymphs will all take fish.

ALPINE LAKES –Too late…start planning for next year.
